Dav Yaginuma

My name is Dav Yaginuma. Previously I was named Dav Coleman; I had my name legally changed in February 2006. You can read about the reasons for this on my wife's weblog.

I'm a long time computer hacker. I started with a Commodore 64 in 1982. I was soon PEEK and POKE'ing out some simple video games and was forever hooked. I ended up eventually with a B.S. in Computer Science and a career that has ranged from running a 160 phone line BBS for IBM in the early-mid 90's to co-founding a Chemical Informatics software company in 2000.

I married a gorgeous and wonderful woman, Mie, in Black Rock City at Burning Man 2005. We are expecting a daughter in July 2006. Mie and I met while she was living in Tokyo. We had a one year long distance relationship before she moved to San Francisco. Much of this is recorded publically at Tokyo Tidbits, a mobile blog that I convinced her to start even though she didn't own a phonecam or know what a "blog" was. We have since introduced a few things to the moblogging scene such as GPS-tagged photos and handwritten posts using a digital pen. Mie has accepted all this geekiness with patience and even enthusiasm. I love her.

We live in San Francisco, California. Although I was raised mostly in North Carolina, I was born here and I feel like there is no better place in the world to live. San Francisco is the perfect blend of artists and technology, urbanism and nature, science and spirituality, activism and leisure, and it is teeming with individual diversity of all kinds.

Other than the geek-sphere, I've long identified with other subcultures in the Bay Area such as the Cacophony, Laughing Squid, the Psy-trance community, and of course Burning Man. I surf occasionally although I still find the cold Pacific waters unpleasant compared to the warm Atlantic waters of North Carolina. Recently I've taken up sailing which keeps me above water (if not entirely dry and warm).
